Adult Assessment and Treatment

Assessment

The aim of an assessment is to get to know you and find out more about the difficulties you are experiencing. I will initially ask you questions about yourself, your condition and the impact of this on your voice, speech, language and/or swallowing ability. I will get to know what areas you are having most difficulties with.  This will be followed by a more formal assessment which uses specific tests to look at your speech, language and swallowing.  I may look at your muscles used for speech and swallow and in the case of swallowing, I may ask you to have something to eat and drink.

Assessment times can vary from 45 minutes to 2 hours (split over 2 sessions). It will depend on the severity and complexity of your condition. I can normally talk to you about our initial impression at the end of the assessment, and advise you about whether therapy is indicated. If required, a formal report can be produced following your assessment.

Treatment

Therapy will be tailored specifically to you depending on your difficulties and how they affect your everyday life.  Therapy can be once or twice per week, depending on your needs, and can last for 30 minutes to 1 hour.  You will be given activities to practice independently between sessions which may include an exercise programme, paper based exercises, therapy apps or computer activities, for example.

Therapy is delivered in agreed blocks of 6 - 8 sessions followed by a review of progress, aims and goals.  We can then advise if further therapy is indicated.
